What is Trademark Renewal?

A registered trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application. To keep protection, you must renew it before it expires, and then every 10 years after that. The renewal is filed with the Trade Marks Registry.

Renewal can be filed up to a year before expiry. Late renewals attract additional fees for a limited period after expiry, and beyond that the mark can be removed from the register and needs a restoration application, which is not guaranteed. Many owners forget the date, so tracking matters.

Timeline & cost

How long it takes and what it costs

Renewals are usually filed within a few working days of receiving your details.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers to the questions we hear most.

You can file renewal up to one year before the 10-year expiry. We recommend renewing well in advance rather than near the deadline.
For a limited period after expiry you can renew with additional fees. After that the mark can be removed from the register and you would need to apply for restoration, which is not guaranteed.
No. A trademark can be renewed indefinitely, every 10 years, as long as you keep renewing and using it.
Renewal is for the trademark owner. If ownership or details changed, those records should be updated, and we help with this first.
